Our calling

It may be a surprise to learn that the calling of the first movement of what now constitutes the German speaking partner within the European movement happened in 1902. The first main conference of "Gläubige Kaufleute und Fabrikanten" (Believing Business People and Industrialists) took place in Berlin on February 18 and 19, 1902. The main theme of the many discussions at that time centred around such questions as "how can I discover and practice the will of God in my personal, professional situation?"

During the Great Depression
A handful of Christian businessmen met together in a Chicago office in 1930 during what still was the most serious economic depression the country had ever seen. Many businessmen went bankrupt, families were destroyed, men committed suicide. Out of the great need of the hour, a few men came to pray for the lives of those in trouble around them in that commercial centre.

After the war
During the fifties and sixties, there was a great harvest of people turning to Christ in many European countries. Instrumental in this post-war movement of the Holy Spirit were the so-called para-church movements, originating in the United States, such as the Billy Graham evangelistic association, Campus Crusade for Christ and the Navigators. These groups mobilized lay people in evangelism to an extent which was realized never before.
