Everyone with open eyes can see the fact that we live at the end of an era which is characterized by a huge spiritual vacuum. There is a comprehensive desperation and doubt about the meaning of human life amongst the majority of our peoples. Boundary factors and traditions, which should give necessary direction to individuals and to society, are being destroyed before our very eyes. Unrestrained, humankind walks through society, changing everything; his traditional family life, his social life and his environment according to his own desires. Violence is rife, corruption rules over individuals, societies and nations.
Our politicians, scientists, sociologists, philosophers and psychiatrists feel helpless in relation to man as an irrational factor. The explosive growth of physical and technological knowledge, as well as today's welfare, the likes of which we have never seen before, overwhelms modern man. Knowledge, ability and prosperity are not always self-evidently related to conscious meaning and responsibility. This requires new men, who rely on God to accomplish this in answer to their faith in His Son Jesus Christ. Contrary to what the ideologists say, only He is able to create the type of human who, as a result of a free choice and inner conscience, does what is right and respects his neighbours and society's interests more than his own. Politicians, ideologists and philosophers know even better than many Christians that the future existence of the human race depends on these 'new men'. Today, an increasing number of thinking and responsible people realize that our knowledge, ability and ideologies are not able to solve any of the life-problems of our time such as a harmonious marriage, trustworthy relationships between parents and children, peace amongst the nations, the solution of loneliness, old age, sickness, death and the ultimate question of the meaning of life. For that reason they seek all kinds of escape and discover that solutions to these problems remain outside man's capabilities. Many of them are, however, willing to allow God to control their existence.
It is at this point that the church should make its contribution. Unfortunately, many of these thinking and seeking people are left disappointed with an indifferent church. For most people the institutional church was the only possible point of orientation in this chaotic world. However, it seems that even the church has taken away the Person of righteousness , a loving God and His eternal blessed Word.
In this situation God has called the Europartners movements to show leading business- and professional people the way to a living relationship with God through Jesus Christ without any denominational hindrances. Besides all this they will be encouraged and supported to be outspoken witnesses in their daily activities and through their whole lifestyle. It is right here that Europartners find its challenge and its responsibility.
The roots of the movement go back as far as 1902, when the first committee of Christians in business was organized in Berlin, Germany. This movement is still vibrant today as our German partner VCK - Christians in Business. The first Christian Business Men's Committee was founded in 1930 in Chicago, USA. A group of businessmen joined together to ask God to alleviate the personal and corporate depression of the time and to give answers to those business and professional men who were looking for meaning in their lives. By 1956 this International movement of Christian business and professional people had expanded to some 20 countries around the world.
In 1957 two new local German speaking groups started in Zürich and Karlsruhe and formed the dynamic Internationale Vereinigung Christlicher Geschäftsleute, IVCG. Since that time the association has grown significantly and today you will find meetings in a great number of larger and smaller cities in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The same `commission' is organized in the French speaking areas by a partner association called 'Association des Cadres Témoins de l'Evangile'(ACTE) and for the English speaking areas and the rest of the world by the Christian Business Men's Committee International (CBMCI).
Europartners movements are active in over 30 different European countries, all obedient to the call of Christ to "present Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord to business and professional people and to help these to fulfill the Great Commission to make disciples in all nations."
